October 25, 2006 - Schmueser Gordon Meyer (SGM), an engineering and surveying firm founded and headquartered in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, is pleased to announce the addition of several new associates.
Due to the increased demand for engineers in Western Colorado, SGM has hired two engineers in training, Christine Bechtel and Shannon Ullman. Christine is a recent graduate of Virginia Tech, where she received a bachelor of science in biological systems engineering, with concentrations in land and water resources and green engineering. A native of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Christine spent this past summer as a Ranger Naturalist for Glacier National Park before relocating to Colorado. While at SGM, she'll be working closely with the firm's water resources team.
Shannon Ullman also recently joined SGM as an engineer. Shannon received her bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Colorado State University and her master's degree in environmental engineering with a concentration in groundwater remediation from the Colorado School of Mines. Prior to joining SGM, Shannon worked at Tetra Tech in Denver as an environmental engineer. Shannon will also be working closely with SGM's water resource team.
Also joining the firm this fall are Frank McSwain and Stephanie Keister. Frank recently relocated to the Roaring Fork Valley from Denver and will serve as a project manager, assisting the firm in the coordination of their energy-related projects in Western Colorado. Frank received his undergraduate degree in business from North Carolina State and his master's degree from Denver University. Frank's extensive experience in business development, real estate, and finance has stemmed from an impressive resume of firms, including Ford, Lucent, & JP Morgan.

September 27, 2006 - Schmueser Gordon Meyer, an engineering and surveying firm founded and headquartered in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, is celebrating its 20th year in business.
For two decades, Schmueser Gordon Meyer (SGM) has been assisting both the public and private sector with an array of engineering and surveying services. During this time, what started out as a firm of just a handful of employees in 1986 has successfully grown to a firm with a strong presence in Western Colorado, with more than 70 employees in offices in Glenwood Springs, Aspen, Crested Butte, Meeker, and Alaska.
SGM is a full-service engineering firm specializing in civil, sanitary, municipal, structural, and resort development engineering, as well as providing construction management and surveying services. The firm was formed when former Schmueser & Associates (S&A) employees Dean Gordon and Louis Meyer purchased S&A's engineering and surveying division in 1986. Since the firm's conception, they've grown from two original shareholders to ten.
?As the Western Slope has grown over the years, Schmueser Gordon Meyer has followed this progression, in both building communities and further developing as a firm,? said Louis Meyer, President and firm co-founder. ?The tremendous expansion and development in Western Colorado has had an enormous impact on communities and their increased energy needs, as well as the need to improve upon existing infrastructures, such as roads, bridges, water, and wastewater facilities."
As issues such as the environment, water quantity and quality, land use, and transportation have become more complex in the past 20 years, firms like SGM have played a significant role in helping communities with planning and development to ensure their residents continue to have the quality of life that drew them to the Western Slope in the first place. Increasingly, SGM also assists communities with more enhanced recreational activities, including further development of ski areas, bike and pedestrian trails, state and local parks, and athletic fields.
?It's been a very rewarding experience, these past 20 years," said Dean Gordon, firm Chairman and co-founder with Meyer. ?We've been a part of some very exciting projects over the years, and there doesn't seem to be any indication that the growth in Western Colorado will slow down anytime soon. With new and interesting projects on the horizon, it's great to see the next generation of engineers come on board. The fresh perspective of our newer associates, coupled with the experience of our long-term employees, makes for an exciting time here at SGM.?
SGM estimates that technical assistance to communities will only become more complex in the future, as a state demographer has recently predicted an additional 300,000 people will move to the Western Slope in the next 25 years - putting a strain on scarce resources such as water. As climate changes may alter the way precipitation occurs in the arid west, communities will be looking for innovative ways to deal with this issue. Furthermore, the nation's appetite for energy will place both primary and secondary impacts on rural counties and local municipalities in Western Colorado, and solutions will be needed to solve already congested transportation routes.
SGM is committed to continuing the success of the past 20 years by working closely with area community leaders and partnering firms to ensure the needs of Western Colorado are met.
